Requirements of Caring Canine Volunteers

Age Requirements

To volunteer, you must be at least 11 years old.   Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by their parents at all times when they visit a facility.  Volunteers under 18 must have parental or guardian consent.

TB & Other Health Requirements

In accordance with Ontario Health Regulations, all volunteers must complete a 2-step TB skin test or a chest X-ray within the last 12 months before starting at a healthcare facility.  (Caring Canine can refer you to clinics which perform the test free of charge for those covered by OHIP.)

You must be in good health.  You must not carry any infectious or contagious disease when you are visiting.  We welcome people with disabilities to volunteer with us.

Police Check

All volunteers over 18 must agree to a vulnerable police check.   (You will be reimbursed by Caring Canine after meeting the minimal commitment stated below.)

Commitment, Reliability, Maturity, and Team work

You agree to make at least 12 visits per year for 2 consecutive years.

Since you will work with the very vulnerable from our community, you must be reliable and mature.  Excellent emotional control, patience, listening skills, and empathy are qualities we are looking for.  Concern for safety, sound judgment, and respect for guidelines are also necessary.

Last but not least, you must be a strong team player and willing to work with other volunteers at Caring Canine.

Membership Fee

You will pay an annual membership fee ($25 for one adult and $30 for 2 adults).  This fee is waived for children and youths under 18, senior citizens with a low income, and people with disabilities.  Your membership fee will help pay for the cost of your liability insurance premium (for $2 million coverage) and support the work of Doctor Dogs.
